Portugal cruise into semi-finals of 2017 Federation Internationale de Football Association confederations cup

Mexico's and New Zeland's players fight during the Confederations Cup Group A soccer match between Mexico and New Zealand at the Fisht Stadium in Sochi Russia Wednesday

Hosts Russia are fully focused on staying in the Confederations Cup as they face elimination in their final group game against Mexico, coach Stanislav Cherchesov said yesterday.

"I thought we played well in many parts of the game; in others, not so well".

Team Mexico cruised past Russian Federation with 2-1 win in the third and final group stage match of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, knocking the hosts out from further battle for the trophy, APA reports quoting TASS.

After conceding the first goal in the 25th minute, Mexico came from behind to beat the hosts. "We competed very well and we're building a team that keeps on showing that it has the ability and determination to give as good as it gets against any side".

Russia's early exit from was another setback for next year's World Cup hosts who also went out of last year's European Championship at the group stage, when they failed to win a game and were regarded by many as the worst team in the tournament.

This year's FIFA Confederations Cup is held between June 17 and July 2 at four stadiums in Russian Federation and they are Spartak Stadium in Moscow, St. Petersburg Stadium, Fisht Stadium in Sochi and the Kazan Arena in Kazan.

Notably, it was the former, who dumped out Wawrinka with a straight set win over the Swiss star in his tournament opener. Spain's Lopez, ranked 32 in the world, said: 'I can not believe I have finally won this tournament.

The linesman's flag denied Spartak Moscow's Samedow after he put the ball in the net early in the second half, and Mexico forged ahead as Lozano's courageous gamble paid off. "Winning is very important for Mexican football". "I think we deserved to win and we're delighted with the result and the performance of the team". After striker Fedor Smolov struck the post with a long-range shot and Zhirkov had his shot saved by Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, Russia kept possession and sent the ball back into the area, where Aleksandr Erokhin missed a chance before Samedov picked up his pass and sent a precise low shot into the far corner.

Mexico defender Nestor Araujo equalised in the 30th minute with a looping header.

Akinfeev made a mistake that led to Mexico's second goal after a long clearance by Herrera from near the south American side's area.

Ronaldo's goal was his 75th with Portugal, taking him level with Sandor Kocsis in second on the list of global goals for European players, and he said he was happy to contribute.

But the goal sparked Mexico into life and they were level just five minutes later.
