Otto Warmbier, student detained in North Korea, is mourned at hometown funeral

Pentagon chief blasts N.Korea over US student who died

"Unfortunately, the bad, torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today", Warmbier's parents said in announcing their son's death Monday. Officials at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was treated, declined to provide details, and Warmbier's family on Tuesday asked that the Hamilton County Coroner not perform an autopsy. In regard to the THAAD missile defense system, China also said it had "reiterated its opposition to the USA deploying the system in South Korea and asked for the deployment to be suspended and the system withdrawn".

Following the service, a police officer played the bagpipes as the casket was taken to a hearse.

"I had to come out to support the family, and also just to show, in my opinion, the North Korean Government that we are a dignified country, unlike them", Mr Koss, a 70-year-old Wyoming resident, said.

Warmbier died Monday after spending more than a year in a coma in North Korea after he was detained during a trip there in early 2016.

Warmbier was buried yesterday in OH, less than a week after he was sent back home in a mysterious coma.

Steve Thomas, his former soccer coach, says he was a key player who had a deep commitment to reaching out to people.

"I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them", it said. "He did things because he wanted to do them".

North Korea denies torturing detained Jewish student who died after release
Mourners console one another as the hearse carrying Otto Wambire departs for the cemetery after a funeral service. Until Friday, North Korea had said only that it released the young man on "humanitarian grounds".

It also accused Seoul of tarnishing Pyongyang's image with its "slanderous talk about cruel treatment and torture" while having no knowledge of the "humanitarian" treatment Mr Warmbier received in the North.

A handout for the funeral featured a photo of Warmbier posing next to his mother and included a quote from his salutatorian speech in 2013: "This is our season finale. This is the end of one great show, but just the beginning of hundreds of new spin-offs".

The service was held at the 22-year-old's school in OH, before his burial at a nearby cemetery.

During his incarceration, Warmbier's family was advised to keep his Jewish background and identity concealed while officials tried to negotiate his release, a negotiator told The Times of Israel.

The services were being held in his home state of OH, with the funeral at his former high school and burial at a Cincinnati cemetery.

The United States, South Korea and others often accuse North Korea of using foreign detainees to wrest diplomatic concessions. He was arrested at Pyongyang airport as he was about to leave.

Otto Warmbier's brother, sister and friends were scheduled to speak at the funeral Thursday in his hometown of Wyoming, near Cincinnati.
