Iran Brands as Crushing and Successful IS Attack in Syria

The spokesman of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Gen. Ramazan Sharif left speaks with The Associated Press reporters at the conclusion of his press conference in Tehran Iran Tuesday

Rouhani, the chairman of the SNSC, said the body had in response to the terrorist attacks in Tehran given wider authority to the country's Armed Forces than the missile raid on Daesh in Syria.

The dispute over the Syrian attack on the USA -backed fighters and the American response came as Iran launched ballistic missiles at Islamic State strongholds in eastern Syria in retaliation for a pair of attacks by extremists in Tehran earlier this month that killed 17 people and wounded more than 50.

Khamenei took to Instagram on Sunday, where he uploaded an edited video that begins with the dramatic footage from the attack inside the Iranian parliament and the ornate mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini on June 7.

As well as punishing "terrorists", it was meant to show that Iran is capable of projecting military power across the region, officials and experts said.

The repeated incidents in the vicinity of the Tanf camp, where US forces train and advise local ground forces in the fight against IS, add to soaring regional tensions that could spiral out of control just as the fight against the extremists enters a crucial phase, with USA -backed forces pushing into the group's de facto capital, the Syrian city of Raqqa.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it fired as many as seven missiles at an ISIS compound in Deir Ezzor while Iranian media cited sources who said that the strikes killed 360 militants on Sunday.

It also raises questions about how U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, which had previously put Iran "on notice" for its ballistic missile tests, will respond.

The US Senate last week passed tough sanctions on Iran for its alleged "continued support of terrorism".

Russian Military Announces Head of ISIS Possibly Killed in Airstrike
If true, the death of Baghdadi would represent a huge blow to ISIS forces under increasing pressure across the region. Russian Federation began bombing ISIS in Syria in September 2015, in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"The Saudis and Americans are especially receivers of this message", he said. The Iranian drone that was shot down Tuesday was outside the deconfliction area, the official said. "This is what they have to show for 30 years of missile development?"

Tehran argues that in a region engulfed with conflicts and wars, its missiles are an indispensible part of its defensive power.

Sunday's strike came amid rising tensions between Riyadh and Tehran.

"The SDF is getting big-headed", said the pro-Damascus military commander, a non-Syrian who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The Guards' missile strike sends a message that extends beyond the fighting in Syria, said non-resident fellow Amir Handjani at the Atlantic Council research centre.

Washington also described those strikes as self-defence. "But the Trump Middle East team knows exactly how and where the Iranians are waging war against the US and our allies".

Military leaders and officials in Iran, a predominantly Shi'ite country, often refer to Sunni Muslim radicals as Takfiris.

"I have one message for Iran: Don't threaten Israel", Netanyahu said, reported AFP.
