Federer crushes Zverev to clinch ninth Halle title

Switzerland's Roger Federer celebrates his victory after the final match against Germany's Alexander Zverev at the Gerry Weber Open tennis tournament in Halle, Germany, Sunday, June 25, 2017.

Swiss tennis player Roger Federer claimed his ninth title at the Halle Open after beating German Alexander Zverev, World No.12, in Sunday's final.

Germany's Zverev, 20, beat Federer in last year's semi-final, but could not match the 18-time Grand Slam champion.

And it wasn't long before the 35-year-old completed victory after showing imperious form all week where he failed to drop a set en route to another title.

Federer did not participate in the French Open after winning back to back titles, starting from the Australian Open, Indian Wells and then Miami. So credits to him, he played an unbelievable match.

Federer's victory answered questions about his recent lay-off, which ended in a shock defeat to Tommy Haas on his comeback in Stuttgart this month.

Hamilton moved within 11 points of title leader Nico Rosberg after their last-lap collision in the 2016 Austrian Grand Prix . Even when we got the red flag, I came on the radio and just was like "man this is fun, this is a good race".

"I played great, I felt good from the start", said Federer.

The bookmakers had already promoted 18-time Grand Slam victor Federer to favourite for Wimbledon after Murray's surprise exit at Queen's.

The Swiss has used the tournament as an ideal platform ahead of Wimbledon for many years and looks in ominous form once again before the third Grand Slam of 2017 gets underway next week - where he will be seeded third.

"It has been a hard year with a lot of practice, training and rehab so I am very happy to be back on the court", he said.

"I was doubting myself a little bit, I must admit, because losing in the opening round for the first time in 15 years on grass was always going to shake me a little bit and it did", admitted Federer.

Zverev created his only break chance in the opening game of the second, but could not take it, and was unable to show why he is regarded as one of the sport's brightest prospects.
