Canada nurse gets life for killing 8 people in her care

A sentencing hearing will begin Monday for a former Woodstock nurse who confessed to murdering eight elderly patients in her care over the span of almost a decade.

Both the Crown and Wettlaufer's defence lawyer have suggested that she serve her sentences concurrently.

Elizabeth Wettlaufer, the worst health-care killer in Canadian history, finally spoke Monday. "Sorry is too small a word".

Elizabeth Wettlaufer told the court Monday she is truly sorry and hopes her victims' families can find peace and healing.

In addition to Wettlaufer's life sentence for murder, she was also sentenced to 10 years in prison for each of the four attempted murder counts and seven years on each of the aggravated assault counts.

By 2041, 25 years from now, she will be 75.

At Monday's hearing, family and friends of the victims are expected to provide victim impact statements to the court.

David Silcox is the son of James Silcox, who was 84 when he was killed by Wettlaufer at Woodstock's Caressant Care nursing home.

The offences were committed between 2007 and 2016, at three long-term care facilities and a private home in southern Ontario.

She attempted to murder Wayne Hedges, 57, Michael Priddle, 63, Sandra Towler, 77, and Beverly Bertram, 68. Wettlaufer claimed she was getting messages from God to kill the patients.

The province has been under fire, along with Ontario's self-regulatory College of Nurses, for a lack of oversight and transparency in the case after Wettlaufer was sacked from a nursing home for a medication error in 2014, after which more deaths occurred.

She struggled with drugs and bizarrely admitted to police that a "red surge" would compel her to commit some of the homicides.

Last September, Wettlaufer gave up her nursing licence and checked herself into a Toronto mental-health facility. On June 1st, the 50-year-old pleaded guilty to first-degree murder after giving a fatal injection of insulin to each of the patients.
