Turkey has no intention of closing Qatar base despite Saudi ultimatum

Iran and Turkey, At War in Syria, Back Qatar in Gulf Crisis With Food and Military Exercises

Reuters was citing an official from one of the four countries.

Thrust into the middle of the crisis, the head of Al-Jazeera's English language service said the network remained committed to continuing its broadcasts. "There are no IRGC (Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps) elements in Qatar and the agreement with Turkey is a long-standing diplomatic agreement so we can not ask them to leave".

Cutting ties to Iran would be hard.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain also recalled their ambassadors from Qatar in March 2014, upset about a perceived interference in their affairs through the network and Qatar's funding of Islamist movements.

"Any call to close to down or curtail Al-Jazeera is nothing but an attempt to muzzle a voice of democracy in the region and suppress freedom of expression", he said by phone. The Qatari government has previously said that several conditions on the list are non-negotiable, according to AP.

Pressure had been mounting on the Saudi-led bloc, which includes Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, to finalize what it wants from Qatar to end the crisis, and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on June 21 he hoped the demands "will be reasonable and actionable".

Qatari officials have not yet responded to requests for comment but said they would issue a statement later in the day.

According to the demands, Qatar must sever ties with "terrorist", ideological and sectarian organisations including the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and the Islamic State.

Egypt and Bahrain accuse Qatar of funding terrorism, fomenting regional instability and cosying up to Iran.

Isik said Ankara had hoped that tensions over Qatar could be resolved without a crisis.

Amidst the deepening Gulf crisis, Saudi Arabia and its allies have presented a list of steep demands to Qatar to end their dispute which has rattled the region for almost three weeks.

The demands include an insistence that Qatar - long considered by its neighbours to be a maverick - align itself "militarily, politically, socially, economically" with other Gulf and Arab states.

"The more that time goes by, the more doubt is raised about the actions taken by Saudi Arabia and the UAE", she added. Yet NPR's Peter Kenyon reports that "the impact has been blunted somewhat as Iran and Turkey stepped in to send food and other supplies to Qatar".

"The base in Qatar is both a Turkish base and one that will preserve the security of Qatar and the region", Isik said in an interview on Friday.
