Democrats parody Trump for his 'all praise' Cabinet meeting

Chuck Schumer

That appeared to be the only question at US President Donald Trump's first meeting of his full Cabinet on Monday, as top aides took turns piling praise on the boss at a unusual event filled with wild and unfounded boasts.

But Mr Reince Priebus, the chief of staff whose job insecurity has been the subject of endless speculation, outdid them all: "We thank you for the opportunity and the blessing to serve your agenda". Vice President Mike Pence said "It is the greatest privilege of my life to serve as vice president".

Cabinet members were "absolutely not" instructed in advance of the Monday gathering to heap praise on the President, Shulkin said on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront".

Secretary of Labour Alexander Acosta said: "I am privileged to be here - deeply honoured - and I want to thank you for your commitment to American workers".

One staffer told Schumer, "Your tone was flawless, you were right on message", while a second added: "You have great hair, nobody has better hair than you".

"I think we've been about as active as you can possibly be at a just about record-setting pace", he added.

North Korea denies torturing or mistreatment of Otto Warmbier
He said North Korea's treatment of Warmbier demonstrated "a basic disregard for human rights, for human dignity". Warmbier was suddenly released from North Korea last week, having spent 17 months in detention in the DPRK.

Donald Trump's disapproval rating may be at an all-time high, but inside the White House, the president could not be more popular.

The meeting was also notable in that Trump allowed his Cabinet members, in full view of the media, to take turns praising him and his policy agenda.

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue told Trump that he just returned to D.C. from a trip to Mississippi. Not only did they heap praise on their leader but many of them could not thank Donald Trump enough for the privilege to serve under him. A recent report said Priebus may be fired by Trump if he does not shake up the White House.

A fairly innocuous statement until we get to the word "blessing"-which positions Trump as a god-like figure bestowing his grace upon the worthy. They love you there". This is the team you've assembled that's working hand in glove for the benefit of America. It was nearly as if there was a competition among cabinet members to see who could come up with the greatest adulation with the hope that their positions will be secured based on their ability to offer the best compliments.

And according to the Washington Post's count of hundreds of key nominations, produced in partnership with the non-profit group Partnership for Public Service, Trump is lagging significantly behind his four most recent predecessors in the nominations his administration has sent to the Senate for consideration.
