Navy recovers bodies of 7 sailors killed in crash

A huge chunk of the still-listing Navy destroyer seems to be missing.

The admiral said the ship had been in danger of sinking but was saved by the "heroic efforts" of the crew.

It's still unclear what caused the collision.

A U.S. Navy destroyer has collided with a merchant ship off the coast of Japan, the U.S. military said, and there have been injuries.

Aucoin said there would be multiple investigations into the collision, including one by the Navy's Judge Advocate General and one by the US Coast Guard. None of the container ship's crew were reported injured.

"It remains uncertain how long it will take to gain access to the spaces once the ship is pier methodically continue the search for the missing", the statement said.

In the middle of the night, a Filipino container ship - nearly three times the size of the destroyer - crashed into the side of the Fitzgerald.

This test prompted the United Nations Security Council to condemn the North Korea, and pass sanctions against the country. At least some North Korean officials are changing their rhetoric following Trump's announcement and Warmbier's death.

Naval commanders praised the sailors for containing flooding caused by the collision, stabilizing the ship and sailing it back to port at the United States naval base in Yokosuka, where divers inspected its damage and developed a plan for repairs and inspection.

The area is particularly busy with sea traffic, said Yutaka Saito of the coast guard.

Tug boats pulled the ship back to the Yokusuka Naval Base, home of the 7th Fleet and located south of Tokyo, by sunset Saturday (local time in Japan), with its remaining crew members lined up on deck. The container ship ACX Crystal is seen in the waters off Japan after it had collided with the USS Fitzgerald on Saturday. "He's okay. Thank you all for the prayers", Rita Schrimsher of Athens, Alabama, tweeted after speaking with her 23-year-old grandson Jackson Schrimsher via Facetime. All three were in stable condition at the US Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, said Cmdr.

"A significant portion of the crew was sleeping" when the destroyer collided with the Philippine-flagged container ship, destroying the commander's cabin, he said. Aerial television news footage showed its bow on the left side was dented and scraped, but it did not appear to have suffered any major structural damage.

It completed $21 million in upgrades and repairs in February and is forward-deployed to Yokosuka, supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region, the service said.

It is chartered by Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and owned by Dainichi-Invest Corporation, NYK said.

All seven missing sailors from the USS Fitzgerald were found dead in flooded berthing compartments following the warship's collision with a merchant vessel, a US Navy official tells CNN.
