How the Trump White House can fix its communications problem

Surrounded by lawyers Trump back in familiar stance

The WH is holding what is essentially a normal briefing in the briefing room but they aren't allowing cameras to record what's being said.

The deputy press secretary said, "I think it was pretty clear in that original statement that he hoped for his sake, and that was, I think, the very intention". Both sides believe the other side is acting in bad faith, and both are losing respect for one another. To achieve this, the American public, too, must demand more transparency, rather than less.

The White House designated the Q&A as "off-camera" and, at first, prohibited broadcasting audio as well - something it has done several times this month. Sean Spicer, the embattled press secretary, spoke for 30 minutes Tuesday and didn't answer a number of basic questions, including whether the president believes Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election and whether Trump had seen the hotly debated Senate health care bill.

Sanders told reporters that she was given a heads up about the president's afternoon tweet on any Comey meeting recordings.

"It's unusual to me, especially as a former White House correspondent, why on an important day like this, they don't want the American public to see this live", Blitzer said on air. With the approval of the president, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has been looking for a replacement press secretary so he can focus on broader strategy.

The White House has a shortlist of candidates it would like to bring on board, including, most notably, the popular conservative pundit Laura Ingraham. He did not respond Thursday to a request for further comment regarding the latest restrictions.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a Trump supporter, echoed O'Brien's point in an interview with The Associated Press.

At the same time, the White House has sought to shift the political conversation to ground more favorable to Trump through coordinated week-long campaigns organized around themes such as infrastructure and apprenticeships.

"I know he's been involved by having members of his administration", she said.

It's no secret that White House Press Secretary#Sean Spicer has had his trouble dealing with the media.

Trump threatened in May to shut down daily press briefings and told Fox News Channel at the time that Spicer was "doing a good job, but he gets beat up". The White House's plan, by officials' own admission, is still months away from completion, which meant "Infrastructure Week" amounted to one fake signing ceremony, in which Trump put his signature on a glorified press release, asking Congress to privatize the nation's air-traffic control system.

He said his organization supports the WHCA's efforts when it comes to advocating for White House reporters.

CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta blasted Monday's no-camera restrictions, suggesting journalists "should walk out" in protest.

In recent weeks, a number of Spicer's question-and-answer sessions with reporters have been conducted off-camera, including on Monday. "Still waiting for a response".

CNN highlighted the White House's evasiveness Thursday with a graphical tease that read, "Soon: White House briefing: live coverage banned".

The move to scale back on-camera press briefings comes amid Trump's increasing unwillingness to interact with the press.
