Extreme Heat Leads to US Flight Cancellations

Tuesday's high was 119 degrees, breaking the mark of 116 set past year and tying for the fourth-hottest day in the city's recorded history.

On Tuesday, more than 50 flights were canceled in and out of Phoenix and during the next few days, travelers could run into a similar situation. Phoenix is the second-fastest warming city in the United States over the past 50 years while Las Vegas comes in at third and Tucson at seventh.

Over the past couple of days, temperatures at the airport have been hovering around 120 degrees Fahrenheit, with the record in Phoenix being 122 degrees between 3 PM and 6 PM.

Death Valley, California, reached 125 Tuesday and Palm Springs hit 121, still a degree lower than the same day past year.

The California Independent System Operator, which manages the state energy grid, called for voluntary conservation until 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Phoenix and Las Vegas are expected stay in the triple digits throughout the week, though Tuesday was supposed to be the hottest day of the week. Today's heat wave is expected to break by Sunday, when the valley of the sun returns to a normal 105 degrees.

Tonya and Lavonda Williams travelled to Sin City from Orlando, Florida, to see the Backstreet Boys in concert.

As the global climate changes, disruptions like these are likely to become more frequent, researchers say, potentially making air travel costlier and less predictable, posing a greater risk of injury to travellers from increased turbulence.

The torrid weather comes as new research found that almost a third of the world's population experience 20 days a year when the heat reaches deadly levels. Research published on Monday showed that half the world's population will face life-threatening heat waves by 2100 unless carbon pollution is curbed.

Meteorologists in the US expect the extreme heatwave to continue for a couple more days.

Regional flights on American Eagle were the most affected, because they use Bombardier CRJ planes that can only operate at temperatures of 118 degrees or below, Feinstein said.

American Airlines and other carriers at Phoenix Sky Harbor are not planning on cancelling any other flights due to heat related reasons this week as temperatures are expected to drop to 116F (47C).

The heatwave gripping the West is so intense that people in Arizona are being warned to be careful around concrete and playground equipment because touching them could cause second and third-degree burns.
