Portugal claim Confederations Cup win over Russia

They can not catch Mexico or Portugal - both of whom are on four points - going into their last match against the European champions on Saturday.

It was no less than New Zealand deserved for a disciplined and intelligent performance during the opening 45 minutes.

With the win, Portugal are now topping Group A with four points from two games while Russian Federation are in second place with three points from two games.

Michael Burgess details three things of note from the All Whites' 2-1 defeat to Mexico this morning.

"There wasn't a lot in it tonight, it was very close", New Zealand coach Anthony Hudson said.

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo scored the only goal of the game at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow just a day after he was summoned to appear in a Spanish court over allegations relating to tax fraud.

In our opinion likely to have New Zealanders are very few Mexicans markedly superior to their overall level and quality of the game, as evidenced by the results of the last person meetings.

Trump weighs North Korea travel ban after Warmbier's death

And many Mexicans have memories of the 2013 World Cup qualifying playoffs, when El Tri prevailed 9-3 over two legs. The game was really rough and violent.

It should be an excellent match, as numerous same stars from last year's European Championship team are playing for Portugal in today's match.

Mexican coach Juan Carlos Osorio described the All Whites as "gentleman" before the game but he had changed his tune after the match, bemoaning that "the game was really rough, almost violent and I think that's unacceptable".

"We played against an opponent playing at home with a home crowd, a team which pressured us, but we were better. We had more opportunities and we were just winners".

Mexico head coach Juan Carlos Osorio apologised for losing his temper during the match. Mexico's last competitive loss came nine games and exactly one year ago when Chile hammered it 7-0 in the Centenary Copa America.

"New Zealand will be a different team compared to Portugal, but they are a hard team to beat", Osorio said at a press conference.

The second round of matches from Group A of the Confederations Cup 2017 is set to kick off on Wednesday as Russian Federation take on Portugal in the first match at Spartak Stadium in Moscow.
