Why some airplanes don't fly in high heat — Science Says

Heat waves ripple across the tarmac at Sky Harbor International Airport as downtown Phoenix stands in the background as an airplane lands, Tuesday, June 20, 2017 in Phoenix. The record high is 122 degrees.

The National Park Service cautioned tourists there about the "EXTREME SUMMER HEAT" in a warning on its website.

National Weather Service meteorologist Kate Guillet said the temperatures are expected to remain hot through the rest of the week - though Tuesday was to be the peak day for heat.

A spokesperson for Sky International Harbor Airport said that so far, airport staff isn't aware of any other airlines that have cancelled flights due to the heat.

The southwest is experiencing its worst heat wave in decades. The temperature reached 118 degrees on Monday, which ties with a record set past year. Residents, who are accustomed to triple-digit weather, are reportedly waking up at the crack of dawn to do yard work, and are taking their mind off the heat with some pretty unconventional methods. It also said, the flight changes are free of charge.

"As temperatures get that extreme, you have to offload so much fuel or passengers or cargo that it no longer makes sense to fly", he said.

Death Valley, California, reached 125 Tuesday and Palm Springs hit 121, still a degree lower than the same day previous year.

"I would recommend that people do something less strenuous than to come out to the toughest hike in Phoenix in the middle part of the day", she said. That hasn't happened since 2013, and it would be only the third time the city has reached that temperature.

"I nearly didn't think lunch would be worth it", the 30-year-old told the Desert Sun newspaper.

Jared Kushner is traveling to the Middle East this week to continue work toward a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians. Mladenov quoted Netanyahu as saying that "there will never be a government that is more pro-settlement than our government".

For those already tired of the heat, here's the real kicker: Summer formally starts Wednesday in the northern hemisphere.

Salt River Project spokeswoman Kathleen Mascarenas says the company delivered a record amount of energy to customers Monday.

Over 7,300 megawatts of energy were consumed between 5 and 6 p.m., topping the prior 11-year record set in 2006.

Mascarenas says though the heat creates a strain on the system, SRP prepares for these situations year-round.

American Airlines flights from Phoenix to cities including Boston, Chicago, and Denver use aircrafts that can operate at higher temperatures and will be unaffected by the cancellations, the Phoenix New Times reported. Excessive heat warnings were issued throughout the state of California today.

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office officials say the inmates are given unlimited access to ice water and iced towels. They said on Twitter that it's "like your skin and flesh are burning off".

American Airlines canceled almost 40 Phoenix flights operated by regional jets because of Tuesday's heat.

This is not the first time that heat has caused a disruption in air travel in Phoenix.

Wednesday's temperatures are supposed to reach 119 degrees, so it's possible that more flights will end up getting cancelled.
