Turkish troops arrive in Qatar amid Gulf tensions

Expulsion of Qataris from Gulf states comes into effect

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Tuesday that the U.S.is "mystified" that Persian Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have not released information to back up claims they have made against Qatar.

Yousef al-Jaida, chief executive of the Qatar Financial Centre, said this week that institutions from Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain had about $18 bn of deposits in Qatari banks that would mature in two months. Although none of the governments is now believed to finance terrorist groups, Saudi Arabia continues to spread its extreme version of Islam throughout the Muslim world while Kuwait and, especially, Qatar, are believed to turn a blind eye to individuals in their countries who engage in such funding.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's spokeswoman signaled his patience is wearing thin as a dispute between a Saudi Arabia-led coalition and Qatar drags into a third week, saying the USA is "mystified" that the group hasn't done more to show how the country can end its isolation.

Nauert said he had made at least 20 calls to both Riyadh and Doha, and that he wanted to see a quicker resolution to the conflict, which has seen Saudi Arabia close its border and airspace with Qatar, home to a huge USA air base.

Nauert addressed this, insisting that the USA position "has not changed" on Qatar despite the wildly inconsistent statements of policy, noting that "the secretary likes results", and that the State Department is unhappy with the long-standing tensions within the GCC fueling this issue with no steps toward resolution.

Trump called on Qatar to stop funding of groups that commit terrorism, saying the Gulf nation had historically done so "at a very high level".

"They want results, and let's see this resolved quickly", Nauert said.

Manchester City confirm £34.9m Ederson signing from Benfica
Pep Guardiola was keen to bring the Monaco ace to England but he has failed to agree a fee with the principality club. Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Ederson from Benfica for €40 million.

Many Qataris keep their cattle in Saudi Arabia, because the tiny Gulf kingdom does not have enough pastures.

"There comes a certain point where you say, 'Folks, you know, let's get this done, let's get this moving along, '" Ms Nauert said.

Tillerson also cancelled a scheduled trip to an Organization of American States meeting this week in Mexico to work the Qatar crisis. "Do we take the easy road or do we finally take a hard but necessary action?"

To date, the administration's messaging on the crisis has been inconsistent.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE are two of America's closest allies.

Al-Kaabi also said Qatar was still importing whatever it needed despite the boycott, and investors had full confidence in the country, with foreign investments in Qatari oil and gas industries having reached 250 billion riyal ($66.67 billion).
