Officials familiar with the matter describe friction on the Justice Department's fourth and fifth floors, home to the suite of offices belonging to the deputy attorney general and the attorney general, respectively, in part because of Rosenstein's handling of the Russian Federation matter.

A special counsel is probing the 2016 presidential election and whether there were any contacts between Russians and the Trump campaign.

President Trump's lawyers say that Comey's testimony before the Senate had inconsistencies. Mueller is now leading the investigation into whether Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump's decision to go after Rosenstein sparked widespread speculation in Washington that he may dismiss the deputy attorney general in yet another attempt to get past the Russian Federation investigation, although the likely effect of such a step would be to ignite a new political firestorm and claims that the President is abusing his power and mounting a coverup.

It was unclear whether the president's comment confirming he was under investigation was based on direct knowledge or media reports by NBC News and others that Mueller is examining whether the president obstructed justice by firing Comey.

President Donald Trump confirmed Friday he is under federal investigation and appeared to single out a senior Justice Department official for criticism, underscoring his growing frustration with the persistent focus on Russia's involvement in the 2016 election and possibly his campaign.

To the editor: Thank you for your editorial noting that President Trump firing special counsel Robert S. Mueller III would likely entail dismissing not only Mueller, but also Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who hired him.

"I appointed him; I stand by that decision, " he said.

The news comes one day after Rosenstein affirmed his support for the special counsel, despite recent reports that Trump was weighing Mueller's dismissal.

"We do not know what this report refers to", said Jamie Gorelick, a lawyer for Kushner.

Madhya Pradesh farmers block highways, court arrest
Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Sangh National Convener Shivkumar Sharma told reporters on Friday that the "agitation would be peaceful". Of course the RSS, through its mouthpiece, Organiser, has tried to blame the Congress for "fuelling" the farmers' agitation.

Baker's views didn't change, even as Comey told Trump a second and third time that he was not being investigated.

Details from some memos were made public in news media accounts in the days after he was sacked, and Comey himself detailed his conversations with Trump at a Senate hearing last week.

The president has long vehemently denied any collusion with Moscow.

Comey prepared multiple contemporaneous memos documenting conversations with Trump that made him uneasy in the weeks before his May 9 firing.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Comey had presented no evidence to prove that Moscow meddled in the United States election, adding that Washington had tried to influence Russian elections "year after year". "I can go around them".

Mr Trump has told associates he has the legal authority to sack Mr Mueller. The newspaper noted Mueller had requested interviews with CIA Director Dan Coats, National Security Agency chief Michael Rogers and Richard Ledgett, the former NSA deputy director.

Comey testified last week that he also felt pressured to drop the Flynn probe.

Trump's tweets came after the top lawyer for his transition team warned the organization's officials to preserve all records and other materials related to the Russian Federation probe.

In light of Trump's concern about leaks, it's possible that Rosenstein's Thursday night statement was aiming to appease a president who has himself often criticized the news media for citing unnamed sources.
