Congressman Scalise undergoes third surgery since Virginia shooting

House Majority Whip Scalise, 51, was shot in the hip by a rifle-welding critic of the president who sprayed bullets on United States lawmakers practising for an annual baseball game in the Washington suburb of Alexandria.

He was fielding at second base while practising for the event when he was shot in the hip and sustained serious injuries as the bullet travelled through his pelvis and injured internal organs.

Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said it's a "good possibility" that the Louisiana Republican will be able to return to work in his full capacity.

The hospital says the Louisiana congressman "will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

Scalise and four others were shot Wednesday morning during a Republican practice for the annual congressional baseball game.

The shooter was identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from IL who had several minor run-ins with the law in recent years and belonged to a Facebook group called "Terminate the Republican Party".

Speaking on the House floor, Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Pa., issued a call to "replace the hateful rhetoric and resistance with respect".

The congressional chorus sang renditions of the National Anthem and "God Bless America" to a crowd that stood transfixed by their melodic voices.

It will also benefit the Capitol Police Memorial Fund, which was added after the shooting amid lawmakers crediting the swift action by Scalise's Capitol Police detail with preventing further carnage.

Baghdadi killed in May 28 airstrike, claims Russia
Baghdadi - a nom de guerre rather than his real name - is believed to have been born in Samarra, north of Baghdad , in 1971. An Iraqi, Baghdadi, 46, broke out from al Qaeda in 2013 after the group leader Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces.

The baseball game has been a Washington tradition since 1909. Democrats and Republicans played in honor of their grievously wounded colleague, Republican Rep. Steve Scalise.

"I would quote the late, great Michael Jackson", said Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., a close friend of Scalise's and the pitcher on the Democrats' team.

Members of Congress are wondering how to fix American political discourse and are rethinking their security after a shooting left a top Republican lawmaker critically wounded and several other people injured at a congressional baseball practice Wednesday morning. They released photos of guns similar to the handgun and rifle that were used in the attack, which officials have said were purchased legally.

For now, Scalise remains in critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., recounted candidate Trump's comments prodding supporters to pummel demonstrators at rallies and said Republicans were being "sanctimonious".

Capitol Police Officer David Bailey, who was wounded in Wednesday's tragedy, walked on the baseball field in crutches to throw the game's ceremonial first pitch along with former New York Yankees manager Joe Torres. Though the game pegs Republicans against Democrats, attendees and participating lawmakers showed unity in wake of the shooting.

The man who shot House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice this week had with him a piece of paper with doodles and the names of three lawmakers.

Hodgkinson had a history of posting angry messages against Trump and other Republicans on social media. "And I think what happened yesterday was symptomatic of it", Republican Representative Mark Sanford told MSNBC on Thursday.
