Trump reportedly mulling the termination of special counsel Robert Mueller

The White House has said Donald Trump "has no intention" of sacking the special counsel investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. NPR reported last week that Mueller had been on the White House shortlist to succeed Comey as Federal Bureau of Investigation director before the Justice Department named him as special counsel.

Rep. Adam Schiff, of California, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, warned Trump that dismissing Mueller would ultimately be futile, saying "Don't waste your time".

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the No 2 official at Justice, also promised on Tuesday (Wednesday NZ Time) that the special counsel, former FBI Director Robert Mueller, would have the independence to pursue the investigation as he saw fit. Watching the president fire the special counsel investigating the Russian Federation scandal would test the GOP's tolerance, but it may be wishful thinking to believe Trump's Republican allies have a sense of limits.

In 1973, there was such a firestorm following Nixon's move against Cox that the White House was forced to appoint another special prosecutor, Texas attorney Leon Jaworski. "He comes from a law firm that represents members of the Trump family", Ruddy said.

Rosenstein said he is the individual who now has the authority to hire or fire Mueller after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from any investigation into Russia amid questions about his contacts with Russian officials during the President Donald Trump's campaign.

"I think Congress should now intervene and they should abolish the independent counsel", the former House speaker said.

Trump aides have reportedly been telling him to steer clear of such a dramatic escalation, but allies such as Newt Gingrich have begun talking up the idea of firing Mueller, which will likely help persuade the president that the move has merit.

Rosenstein's comments come just a few hours after one of Trump's longtime friends told "PBS NewsHour" the president was thinking about firing Mueller.

Mueller has served multiple presidents in both parties.

President Donald Trump announces tough revisions to US-Cuba policy
Christie on Friday said Trump's statement "should give great confidence to every American who supports our system of justice". She believes the United States should not engage with Cuba unless it undertakes significant progress on human rights .

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is to appear Tuesday afternoon before the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is conducting its own inquiry into the matters before Mueller.

When asked by the pool of reporters covering a midday meeting with Republican lawmakers at the White House whether he supported Mueller, Trump gave no answer, even though he often uses such interactions to make headlines or shoot down stories he believes to be fake.

Special counsel former FBI Director Robert Mueller could only be fired by Deputy US Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on Ruddy's remarks.

"And the reason for that is, that if it is within the scope of Director Mueller's investigation - and I've been a prosecutor for 27 years - we don't want people talking publicly about the subjects of ongoing investigation", he continued.

"I think he's weighing that option", Mr Ruddy said.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said on June 6 that he had "not discussed" whether Trump felt comfortable with Mueller as special counsel.

Schiff told CNN's Anderson Cooper if Mueller was ousted, Congress would have to re-establish the Independent Counsel Act that expired following the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.
