Russian meddling in 2016 U.S. elections unfolds: Cover-up by Trump?

President Donald Trump speaks during a news conference with Romanian President Klaus Werner Iohannis in the Rose Garden at the White House Friday

US President Donald Trump has denied he tried to interfere with an FBI investigation, effectively accusing James Comey, the FBI's former director, of lying under oath to Congress.

Trump said that Comey's testimony also vindicated him from allegations that he colluded with Russian meddling in the 2016 United States presidential election.

Mr Comey, who was sacked by Mr Trump in May, delivered a scathing indictment of the president on Thursday at a congressional hearing. Trump made the remarks while responding to questions on Comey's explosive testimony in which he accused the president of trying to stop a probe into the alleged Russian interference in the USA elections previous year. Only 15 percent of Americans said they believe Trump did not ask for Comey's loyalty.

Standing with the president of Romania, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partner, Trump at last confirmed his commitment to the alliance's mutual defense pact, Article 5, uttering words he deliberately did not say when he spoke at NATO's gathering in Belgium last month.

The committee's chairman, Rep. Mike Conaway Texas, and the ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, sent a letter Friday to White House Counsel Don McGahn, asking him whether any such tapes or memos exist now, or had existed in the past.

In his sole tweet on Comey's testimony to date, Trump had called Comey a "leaker" for passing memos of one-on-one talks with Trump to a lawyer who then provided them to a reporter, also saying he felt Comey's words amounted to "total and complete vindication".

Comey, who was sacked by Trump in May, did not make any major disclosures about any links between Trump or his associates and alleged Russian meddling.

New opposition to Trump's United Kingdom visit
The attacking of Khan has been a controversial move by Trump, leading to outcry by some in the U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has said there is "no reason" to cancel Mr Trump's state visit.

President Trump has reacted to fired FBI Director James Comey's dramatic testimony. In his written statement to the committee, Comey says that in one phone conversation, Trump said "that if there were some "satellite" associates of his who did something wrong, it would be good to find that out".

"And I think you saw today the overwhelming majority of the intel members, Democrats and Republicans, feel that Jim Comey is credible".

Trump had been uncharacteristically quiet on Thursday, refraining from live-tweeting Comey's testimony and relying on his personal attorney to respond afterward.

The Romanian president, elected in 2014, is in the focus on his country's defense relationship with the U.S.

And the idea that Rosenstein, who had been criticized for his role in the dismissal of Comey, reached into the White House process to fill the Federal Bureau of Investigation post and instead invited Mueller to serve as a Justice Department special counsel underscores the heavy pressure Rosenstein was under to find an independent law enforcement leader to take charge of the Russian Federation probe. That Comey was a private citizen when he leaked the memo is irrelevant to every point except one: he could be criminally charged as a private citizen. But in his Rose Garden remarks, the president repeated his claim that the probe into possible collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation is merely a creation of his political opponents.

But Trump refrained from confirming that he had records of conversations with Comey as he previously implied.

Trump's private attorney Marc Kasowitz is expected to file a complaint with the Justice Department inspector general next week, The Associated Press reported. We are doing really well.
