Polygamist Leader Lyle Jeffs Caught After Year Of Running

The 57-year-old polygamous sect leader went on the run almost a year ago after removing an ankle monitor.

Details of Lyle Jeffs' arrest were not available but the sheriff's office in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, lists him as being held in the county jail without bond. But he "was confined to his Salt Lake County home with few exceptions, told he couldn't contact various people affiliated with the sect, and made to wear a Global Positioning System monitoring device".

A detailed 2016 profile in the Salt Lake City Tribune portrayed Lyle Jeffs as a braggart with a temper, who enforced the rules at the FLDS compound with little mercy. FILE - This Jan. 21, 2015, file photo, Lyle Jeffs leaves the federal courthouse in Salt Lake City.

Yankton County authorities said Jeffs was using the restroom at the marina before he was pulled over.

Investigators have reason to believe Jeffs was in the area for at least two weeks and living out of his vehicle, Barnhart said, adding that he appeared to have "limited resources".

Rothschadl said police made the traffic stop as Jeffs drove through the marina after using a bathroom, but that he doesn't know why Jeffs was in southeast South Dakota.

According to testimony of former FDLS members, people whom Warren Jeffs designated as "bishops", including his brother Lyle, were at the top of the compound's pecking order while Warren Jeffs served time. During Jeffs' first visit, Haug said, the fugitive was fidgeting, seemed nervous and was "acting like a freak". A tip the day before included a description of late model Ford F-150.

"Every once in a while, when someone's weird, we look into them for no apparent reason other than we're just bored sometimes", Haug said.

Lyle Jeffs had used olive oil to remove his ankle monitor and escape home confinement in Utah one year ago.

Trump holds freaky praise-filled Cabinet meeting
While the story about Monday's first full Cabinet meeting may not be controversial, it was "different". "Thank you Mr. Alex Acosta , the secretary of the Labor Department, called it a "privilege" to be in the White House.

Jeffs did not resist arrest, and confirmed his identity to arresting officers, Barnhart said.

Jeffs is the brother of infamous polygamist leader Warren Jeffs, who was convicted of child sexual assault in 2011 for his "marriages" to a 12-year-old and 15-year-old.

The FLDS is believed to have about up to 10,000 members. The group is an offshoot of mainstream Mormonism, which disavowed polygamy more than 100 years ago.

The FLDS has a compound in Pringle, South Dakota. Barnhart said it is unclear if Jeffs spent any time there. The disbursement of the reward money has not yet been determined, Barnhart said. We do not give up. "That would be nice".

Meanwhile, Jeffs' co-defendants resolved their cases by pleading guilty to felony or misdemeanor charges.

Jeffs was the last of the defendants in the food stamp fraud case still behind bars when U.S. District Judge Ted Stewart reversed an earlier decision and granted his release on June 9. Prosecutors opposed that move, arguing Jeffs was a flight risk.

Huber said trying to escape is always a bad idea.

"It's a serious offence to flee justice and we do not take it lightly".
