Trump on Comey 'leaks': 'Totally illegal? Very cowardly!'

Mueller, himself a widely respected former head of the FBI, has now taken up the angle of possible efforts by Trump to obstruct justice in the investigation, the Post said.

As it turns out, Donald Trump is the hope-and-change president.

It is the most significant sign that Mueller's investigation is extending beyond questions of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

In response to the news, Mark Corallo, spokesman for Trump's personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, said in a statement, "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable, and illegal". Grassley's office said the letter is in response to a recent letter from Feinstein requesting that the committee seek details from senior Federal Bureau of Investigation leadership about Comey's interactions with Trump before he was sacked. "This week, Vanity Fair's Abigail Tracy wrote an essay titled "Why Everyone in the West Wing Will Need to Lawyer Up", which explained in detail why "(o) perating in a White House under investigation is fraught with peril.... Experts point out that the Supreme Court ruled during the Watergate scandal that officials can not use privilege to withhold evidence in criminal prosecutions. "The greatest risk aides face is being accused of obstruction of justice or perjury".

The interviews could come as early as this week, the Post said. If one were an adult with full knowledge of the president's pre-political history and the common sense of an investigator, one might reasonably conclude that the hoper-in-chief was making a strong suggestion, the ignoring of which could have deadhorse- in-your-bed consequences.

Coats was attending a briefing at the White House together with officials from several other government agencies. "Hey, I hope this happens, but you've got to do your job.' That's what he told Comey". Or, as various commentators have suggested, why didn't Comey say, "I'm sorry, Mr. President, but this is highly inappropriate and I'm going to have to excuse myself"?

As part of the probe, the special counsel has also gathered Comey's written accounts of his conversations with Trump.

But Comey's concentration on the president's hope may have doomed him.

Trump '100 percent' Willing To Respond To Comey Under Oath
Reporters asked Blunt if he stood by that assessment, even though Trump's version of events was incompatible with Comey's. And Republicans close to the investigation are similarly pained by the questions raised by the conflicting accounts.

The Post reported that Mueller and his team are interviewing senior intelligence officials about Trump's role.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is planning on opening an investigation into the events surrounding President Donald Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. "If I'm Trump's lawyer, I now know that the obstruction file is open in the special counsel's office", he said, asking not to be identified.

Mueller has not publicly discussed his work, and a spokesman for the special counsel declined to comment.

Accounts by Comey and other officials of their conversations with the president could become central pieces of evidence if Mueller decides to pursue an obstruction case.

"You're fired", the apprentice-president bravely conveyed to Comey via the very news media he so abhors, except when he doesn't.

Trump's offer to testify heightens the drama of his standoff with Comey, who told senators that Trump had demanded his personal loyalty and had pressured him to drop a counterintelligence investigation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

He later acknowledged firing Comey out of frustration with the pace of the Russian Federation investigation.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee investigating Russian influence in the 2016 presidential campaign said Wednesday they'd met with Mueller to ensure their investigations don't conflict. But Trump did not do so in advance of Sessions' testimony.
