Special counsel investigating Trump for obstruction of justice, Washington Post reports

In the gaggle on Air Force One on Tuesday, White House deputy press secretary Sarah Sanders said the President wasn't able to watch "much of it", but from "what he did see and what he heard, he thought that attorney general Sessions did a very good job and in particular was very strong on the point that there was no collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign".

On Tuesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions told the Senate Intelligence Committee that there were discussions at high levels about firing FBI Director James Comey even before Sessions was confirmed.

"I am not stonewalling", Sessions replied, saying he was simply following Justice Department policy not to discuss confidential communications with the president. Sessions argued that in the context of that hearing, "my answer was a fair and correct response to the charge as I understood it".

Sessions was sworn in February 9 but did not actually step away from the investigation until March 2, the day after The Washington Post reported on his two previously undisclosed Kislyak meetings. However, Trump's irate reaction to Sessions's recusal was also reported. But Jim Comey testified that he was the person that first requested a private meeting with the president on January 6.

Legal experts said there was some merit to Sessions' argument.

Grassley announced the investigation in a letter to California Sen. That was not so, he said.

Sessions continued to insist that he could both recuse himself from the FBI's Russian Federation investigation and support the dismissal of Comey as the FBI director.

Sessions raised his voice in protest when asked what those reasons were. "Wyden, there are none", Sessions insisted, his voice rising.

SESSIONS: You tell - this is a secret innuendo being leaked out there about me, and I don't appreciate it.

The White House referred questions to Trump's personal attorney, Marc Kasowitz.

The investigation into ties between President Trump's campaign and the Russian government has now turned to investigating Trump himself for obstruction of justice, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.

"I have confidence in Bob Mueller", said top House Republican Paul Ryan, in remarks echoed by top senator Mitch McConnell. Under the regulation, special counsel Mueller may be fired only for good cause, and I am required to put that cause in writing.

Sen. Flake said he helped apply pressure to Steve Scalise's wound
White House spokesman Sean Spicer said President Trump and Vice President Pence were getting updates on the incident. Members were in the House chamber gave both sides a standing ovation after the two addressed their colleagues.

They came to praise President Donald Trump, not focus on the controversies engulfing him.

The fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director said ultimately it was up to Mueller to make a determination whether the president crossed a legal line.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Sen.

Rosenstein's memo to Sessions about Comey was originally used to justify Comey's firing - although Trump undercut that a few days later, when he told NBC News that he fired Comey because of the Russian Federation probe. "I anxious it would be feeding seagulls at the beach if it was I who gave it to the media", he said.

Sessions also defended his decision to participate in the firing of Comey. Namely, they were upset with his very public handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe, which Sessions said was a "usurpation" of Justice Department authority. But that changed shortly after Trump fired Comey last May, the Post's sources said. "I'm not sure what was in his mind specifically".

"I don't think the only options are you have to spill the beans on everything you said to the president of the United States, or you have to invoke executive privilege, especially when you're appearing voluntarily as all these witnesses do", he said.

Sessions maintained that he had not been briefed on the Russian Federation investigation between the time of his February swearing-in and his March 2 recusal.

Mueller, Rosenstein said, has the "full independence he needs to conduct that investigation".

On another hot-button issue, Sen. He also denied that he asked Comey to utter a loyalty pledge during a private Oval Office meeting before which he asked officials, including Sessions and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, a top White House adviser, to leave the room.

Trump said in May that China may have hacked the emails of Democratic officials to meddle with the election, offering no evidence and countering the view of intelligence officials.

Would any such tapes have to be preserved? "I can tell you that for absolute certainty", Sessions told Democratic Sen. And all of it probably made Sessions' boss very happy.
