DUP heads to No10 to work out agreement with Theresa May

Meanwhile, Scottish Conservative leader, Ruth Davidson, last night said she had received assurances from Mrs May over gay rights should the Tories do a deal with the DUP.

Timothy and Hill have been accused of creating a "toxic" atmosphere in Downing Street.

She hailed her party's historic election victory of securing 36% of the vote.

The DUP is "likely to increase the pressure on Theresa May to secure a comprehensive free trade agreement", said Stephen Booth of the Open Europe think tank.

If the latter happens, Labour's Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the largest opposition party may be invited by the Queen to form a government either as a minority or in coalition with another party or parties.

"We welcome this commitment, which can provide the stability and certainty the whole country requires as we embark on Brexit and beyond". With 650 MPs in Parliament, 326 seats are needed for an absolute majority in the House of Commons.

After frantic consultations with DUP leader Arlene Foster, the Prime Minister headed to Buckingham Palace to seek the formal permission of the Queen to form a new government, returning to No 10 to announce she had the "legitimacy" to continue in office.

A petition launched against the Conservatives joining a coalition with the DUP has attracted nearly 450,000 signatures in 12 hours.

Labour gained 30 seats to win 262, with 40 percent of the vote compared to 42.4 percent for May. "Then it will be incumbent on us to ensure we have that period of stability and that is exactly what we will do".

India stroll into semi-finals with rout of South Africa
Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Hardik Pandya meanwhile, will look to inflict some damage on the opposition bowlers lower down the order. The pair put on 128 for the second wicket before Dhawan was caught, but the damage had always been done to South Africa's hopes.

Sinn Fein has insisted that it won't change its abstentionist policy even to help Mr Corbyn in the Commons.

The Prime Minister's former communications chief Katie Perrior, who left Downing Street when the election was called, hit out at the two aides' "rude, abusive, childish behaviour".

May had called the snap election with a view to increasing the narrow majority she had inherited from her predecessor David Cameron.

The Conservative-backing Daily Telegraph newspaper had earlier warned: "Mrs May must accept that the result is an indictment of the furtive way she does business".

But after a poor campaign and an unexpectedly stiff challenge from Labour, her plan went disastrously wrong.

The march marks the second day of protests in response to the possibility of Theresa May carrying on as Prime Minister by forming an unofficial coalition with the DUP, known as a "confidence and supply" arrangement, where the ten MPs from the DUP would vote with the Government on a case-by-case by basis.

Fallon said the DUP would agree to back the Conservatives on big economic and security issues.

'One of them is country, one of the others is LGBTI rights and I asked for a categoric assurance that if any deal was done with the DUP there would be absolutely no rescinding of LGBTI rights in the rest of the United Kingdom and that we would try to use any influence that we had to advance LGBTI rights in Northern Ireland.

The DUP are pro-union (not Europe but UK), pro-Brexit and socially conservative. But for now, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson says reports of a plot to remove May herself is "tripe".
