Hamilton wins F1 Canadian GP, picks up points on Vettel

Lewis Hamilton of Britain steers his car during the Formula One Grand Prix in Monaco

Lewis Hamilton says his pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix shows how hard Mercedes is being made to work in the fight against Ferrari.

"Ayrton was my favourite driver".

Hamilton was also given Senna's yellow race helmet which he worn when he raced for the Lotus-Honda team during the 1987 season.

Valtteri Bottas was second, 19.7 seconds behind, to give Mercedes a sweep of the top two spots as it jostles with Ferrari in the championship points race.

"It's the most special thing I have, beyond all the trophies and everything. To equal him. I just can't believe it".

Hamilton's reaction to his gift took away some of the focus on what was probably one of the fastest and finest pole laps of his career.

Trump's lawyer to file complaint against Comey
US President Donald Trump says he is "100%" willing to speak under oath about his conversations with ex-FBI chief James Comey . The FBI director is a political appointee nominated by the president, and can be removed by the U.S. leader at any time.

Hamilton was nearly a third of a second quicker than Vettel in Q3 on Saturday, a time of one minute, 11.459 seconds enough for the Mercedes driver to earn his 65th career pole and equal the tally of his idol, Ayrton Senna.

"It was a sexy lap, a great lap", he said, knowing that he had proved he had rediscovered his raw speed again after a desultory weekend at last month's Monaco Grand Prix.

"They've got some unique bits on the auto that I think will work well for them this weekend, but that doesn't mean we can't take the fight to them". "It is true that we faced tough competition, but we could have been closer", said the Ferrari driver. "If they're the same level and we're more up and down all the time, for sure it puts a lot of emphasis on us just pulling together more than ever".

Hamilton claimed his maiden Formula One victory in Montreal 10 years ago and on Sunday seeks his sixth victory at the circuit.

"In the five years I've been with this team I've never seen such great teamwork and communication, we're all just talking more than ever and it's great today to be able to see the fruits of that hard work and it's not just chat for nothing".
