UK Election: Theresa May to form government with DUP backing

A majority of people in Northern Ireland voted "remain" in the referendum on European Union membership, but the socially-conservative DUP is pro-Brexit - aligning it with one of Ms May's key goals. Those values could come up in any power-sharing talks with the Conservatives.

In Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon's Scottish National Party - which won all but three seats in the 2015 election - lost much of its base to the Scottish Conservatives, led by Ruth Davidson.

The UK general election on June 8 delivered a hung parliament.

DUP's MPs, according to Jaffe, are among the "staunchest supporters of Israel in the House of Commons".

Why was a deal so easy?

Earlier however, senior DUP figures made clear they were looking at a "confidence and supply" arrangement - in which they would back the Government on the budget and in any vote of confidence - rather than a more formal pact or coalition. With results declared for almost all of the 650 seats, Conservatives won 318 while the opposition Labour secured 262, leaving neither party anywhere close to the 326 seats required for an overall majority. This pact builds on that cooperation.

May called a snap general election in April, being convinced the British public would give her a strong mandate as she prepares for a battle with the European Union over Britain's post-Brexit relationship with the bloc.

It's relatively unlikely the DUP will end up holding substantial sway for long, given the inherent instability of the planned arrangement and the fact it may violate the peace agreement that ended the decades of conflict in Northern Ireland. For unionists the link with Britain is key.

During interrogation, he is learnt to have told police that Chhota Shakeel had promised him more money once the job was done. Special cell sleuths arrested Junaid early on Thursday from Wazirabad Road in north-east Delhi .

The chair of its Education Committee, Mervyn Story, and a number of other DUP members are part of the Caleb Foundation, which is a leading creationist lobby group in Northern Ireland.

Their manifesto retains the pensions triple lock and universal winter fuel allowance - policies that the Tories said they would drop.

Hailing what he called an "incredible result" for his party, Mr Corbyn declared: "We are ready to serve this country".

What do they stand for?

They have proven themselves to be socially regressive when it comes to LGBTQ matters, women's reproductive rights and their attitude towards indigenous languages. It once opposed the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Northern Ireland with the slogan: "Save Ulster From Sodomy".

In areas like climate change, abortion and same-sex marriage, the views of the DUP are a world apart from those expressed by many Conservative MPs, particularly those elected under David Cameron's leadership. He said: "Peter will not marry Paul in Northern Ireland", the Telegraph reports.

"I am concerned about the DUP's track record on equality issues". That Executive collapsed in January 2017 and, following elections in March, no new Executive could be formed. They also know their way around a pork barrel and will be expecting pet projects to be generously supported.

NPR said it will be just the second coalition government formed in the United Kingdom since World War II.
