Iran says IS-claimed attacks killed 16

ISIL uses terror to set people against one another, so by that standard, its assault on the Iranian parliament and on visitors to a shrine to Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, may prove to have been much more successful than its recent strikes in the United Kingdom.

Many in Iran are asking how armed men managed to penetrate the several layers of security around the parliament complex, which is on a major road running through central Tehran. "There is no doubt that the [Islamic State] and the Saudis are thirsty for the blood of Iranians, but this should not make us neglect the main mastermind", the daily said.

Suicide bombers attacked parliament and the mausoleum of the Islamic Republic's founder Ayatollah Khomeini on Wednesday.

That was condemned by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who tweeted: "Repugnant WH (White House) Iranians counter terror backed by USA clients".

Iran's Revolutionary Guards [IRGC] accused Saudi Arabia of masterminding the attacks, saying that the assaults "happened only a week after the meeting between the U.S. president [Donald Trump] and the [Saudi] backward leaders who support terrorists".

"We are focused on intelligence"-gathering, he said".

In a statement, IS warned of further attacks against Iran's Shia Muslim majority. But no proof or specifics were offered.

The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for the attacks and threatened to stage more.

Other Iranian leaders sought to play down the attacks, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei saying: "These firecrackers that happened today will not have the slightest effect on the will of the people".

The two attacks have been claimed by the Islamic State and they have vowed to increase their targets.

Egypt's Foreign Ministry offered its condolences to the families of the deceased on Thursday and called on the global community to intensify its efforts to fight terrorism and its sources of funding. A senior Interior Ministry official told Iran's state TV the male attackers wore women's attire. He did not elaborate.

Iran's state TV says four attackers were involved in a parliament shooting that is still underway, and that eight people have been wounded.

The five men who launched attacks in the heart of Iran's capital previously fought for ISIL, the country's intelligence ministry said on Thursday.

NSA chief says was never asked to act illegally
Rogers, responding testily to Warner's repeated attempts to get additional details, refused to confirm or deny the reports . Why would it not be appropriate for you to share that conversation with us? Rogers replied, "Not that I'm aware of".

"Last year, they returned to carry out terrorist attacks in the holy cities of Iran", the ministry added in a statement on state news agency IRNA.

"My deep sympathy goes out to the American nation, particularly those who have suffered from the attacks and also the families of the victims", Khatami said on Iranian television.

The White House's insulting response to the Tehran attacks has not been well received by most Iranians or by the Iranian government. The Syrian president spoke to his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rohani by phone on Thursday.

Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards have pointed the finger at regional rival Saudi Arabia, a close USA ally, which Iran accuses of funding extremism and groups, including ISIS.

Two separate attacks shook Tehran on June 7.

A separate terrorist group in the country has been detained before it managed to carry out any terror attack.

Saudi Arabia has denied involvement, Reuters reports. Whether Wednesday's attacks turn out to have been perpetrated by Sunni Iranians or ISIS members from outside the country, things are about to get a lot worse for Iran's Sunni population.

Of the eight attackers, six were killed and two arrested, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.

Iran's foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Thursday rejected Trump's condolences for the twin attacks in the capital.

Paulo Casaca: Iran has a long tradition of supporting terrorist groups not necessarily aligned with the Shiite sect of Islam, for instance al Qaeda, Hamas or the Taliban.

"Repugnant WH statement & Senate sanctions as Iranians counter terror backed by USA clients".

"We grieve and pray for the innocent victims of the terrorist attacks in Iran, and for the Iranian people, who are going through such challenging times", Mr Trump's statement read.

The bloodshed shocked the country and came as emboldened Sunni Arab states - backed by U.S. President Donald Trump - are hardening their stance against Shiite-ruled Iran.
