Conservatives are only party who can form a UK government-May

With the clock ticking on the Brexit negotiations and the need for a strong government, there could be a second snap general election in a short space of time.

During the election campaign she repeatedly failed to back her chancellor, Philip Hammond, to stay in his job.

"And who lost their seats and didn't deserve to lose their seats".

'She is putting that at risk with a sordid, risky distasteful deal.

A few hours later, Ms Foster said she had spoken to May and the DUP would "enter discussions with the Conservatives to explore how it may be possible to bring stability to our nation at this time of great challenge".

The DUP only represents Northern Ireland, but it runs candidates for seats in the U.K. Parliament.

Mr Corbyn gained 29 MPs, 261 in total, taking shock seats in Canterbury and reportedly Kensington, with the latter having gone through yet another vote recount yesterday evening due to Tory denial - which started shortly before the Star went to print.

The rationale behind the early move in sterling was simply that markets dislike political uncertainty, so the prospect of a period without a government, particularly as the United Kingdom heads towards the beginning of formal Brexit negotiations, is not a nice one for investors.

May had been expected to move senior figures in her Cabinet if she had won an increased majority.

Flanked by her 10 MPs, the DUP leader was vague about what her party will request from the Conservatives in exchange for keeping Mrs May in Downing Street.

The DUP won 10 electorates in Northern Ireland, so has 10 seats in Parliament - but overall it only got 292,316 votes.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said she had lost all legitimacy and called on her to stand aside and allow him to form an alternative administration, declaring: "We are ready to serve".

May to form 'government of certainty' with DUP backing
However, with almost all votes counted, the Conservatives are on 315 seats, short of the 326 mark that ensures a majority. May had hoped to be celebrating an increased majority for the Conservative Party having called a snap election in April.

Members of May's own party were also scathing.

However, May's weak position has left her unable to make major changes, while Conservative MP Anna Soubry said yesterday May should "consider her position".

But the Conservative leader signalled her determination to fight on during a grim speech in her Maidenhead constituency.

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson has since sought assurances from May that any deal with the DUP would not affect LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and/or Intersex) rights across the UK.

Liberal Democrats gained four seats to amass 12 MPs but lost its former leader and ex-deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, perhaps the highest-profile casualty in a night of stunning results.

Meanwhile, more than 300,000 people have signed a petition which calls on the Tories not to do a deal with the DUP in order to form a government. If the political stalemate continues, there is the very real possibility of another general election.

May's campaign took a nosedive when the Conservatives announced controversial plans on the care of the elderly last month - branded a "dementia tax" by opponents - leading her to tweak the policy days later. She has previously indicated she prefers an "open not closed" Brexit.

It means the Democratic Unionist Party - a small party in Northern Ireland - is now the kingmaker, with an unexpected chance to have a big say in Britain's divorce from the European Union.

Former New Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell, whose government helped secure the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, said Ms May was threatening the peace process by the deal.

At almost 69 percent, turnout for the election was the highest in 20 years, and analysts said that Labour had benefited from a strong showing from young voters.

But despite Brexit's relative absence from the debate, it may have been the defining issue in voters' minds, a year after the seismic referendum vote to leave the EU.

"Other personnel issues are for other days", she said when asked about their future.
