Comey: Lynch directed me to downplay Clinton email probe

The meeting convinced him to go public in an "ultimately conclusive way", Comey said during Thursday's highly anticipated testimony.

He then went on to say that he felt the attorney general was trying to align the Department of Justice's language surrounding the investigation with that of the Clinton campaign.

Though the bulk of his testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence focused on President Trump's decision to suddenly fire him and the Kremlin's alleged influence, conservatives seized on the Lynch comments, interpreting them as Lynch's attempt to interfere with the Clinton probe and "downplay" its importance.

"I had to do something separately to protect the credibility of the investigation, which meant both the FBI and the Justice Department", Comey said in the hearing.

Fired FBI chief James Comey appears before the Senate intelligence committee on Thursday, June 8, 2017.

What if the national spectacle the country has endured comes down to one man, James Comey?

HSBC was not among those banks, but in 2014 agreed to pay $618 million to resolve related probes by USA and British regulators. Scott insists the accusations are untrue and sources close to him said that he would fight extradition proceedings to the US.

Comey said he didn't push back. "That gave me a queasy feeling".

Loretta Lynch instructed Comey not to call the criminal investigation into the Clinton server a criminal investigation.

COMEY: There were other things that contributed to that.

Comey also called other explanations of his decision to make his conclusions on Clinton public "nonsense", referencing press reports that a fabricated document - which he knew to be fake at the time - influenced his thinking.

Comey replied by outlining that "it concerned me, because we were at the point where we had refused to confirm the existence, as we typically do of an investigation, for months; and it was getting to a place where that looked silly, because the campaigns were talking about interacting with the FBI in the course of our work".

"The irony of him throwing Lynch under the bus but claiming victim with Trump is THICK".
